Amongst the generic logo t-shirts, wallet holders, coasters and general knick-knacks that have popped up bearing the Time Lord Victorious name, or the myriad products displaying Lee Binding’s (admittedly excellent) main promotional image for the range, lies one piece of tie-in merchandise that’s a little bit special.
When James Goss spoke during a Time Lord Victorious panel about designing a t-shirt to tie in to the ongoing story, at first it sounded like a joke, a self-aware jibe at the seemingly ever-expanding range of products filling the TLV range. But it turns out, the mythical shirt does in fact, exist, and truth be told, it’s a bit of a beauty.
By day, the image presents your typical Ood slave, ever-ready to serve. But this is not an ordinary Ood at all. This is an odd Ood. This is Brian, and in darkness his true nature is revealed, with his good friend ‘Mr Ball’ now furiously shouting his intention to “KILL!” while further glow-in-the-dark text detailing more about the assassination services that Brian can provide – courtesy of the Order of Oberon, naturally.
Yes, a glow-in-the-dark t-shirt is a bit of a gimmick, but here it’s a gimmick that’s been smartly implemented to create a design with real character. It helps too that the Ood have become an iconic Doctor Who species, so the shirt can easily be appreciated by members of the general public who may know nothing about Time Lord Victorious or Brian in particular.
The price, £17.99, may seem steep to many for a fairly standard t-shirt, but as a regular theme park visitor I’ve seen far worse shirts sold for a lot more, and in my experience it’s rare to see a piece of Doctor Who clothing with such a fun design without delving into the realm of fan-made products.
So go on, get yourself your own Brian. I’ve got a feeling he may go on to be the most beloved element of the whole Time Lord Victorious range…
